After attending high school for 4 years and then starting swing dancing in college, I can say right now that almost no one will know how to dance that well at a prom or winter formal dance. The majority of the people will do some form of grinding (if it is allowed) to the hip hop songs and then the penguin/waddle dance to the slow songs (it is the one where you learn against each other and then move back in forth as you move in a tight circle). However, there will always be a person or two who knows a little more than others, but how many times do you remember the bad dancers? You probably don't.

If you want to learn dancing in a few days, you are not going to be a professional in that amount of time, but you can at least make more people believe you know what you are doing. The easiest way to start is to listen to the music and be able to keep time. You can do this by taping your foot to the beat or by moving the way you think the music is telling you to. Most popular music is written in 4/4 time which translates to there being a break or bridge every 32 beats (if you know when to start counting). You should be able to tell when the break is by something in the music being added, taken away, or completely changing. Use this to know when you can add something different or change it up.

The last thing crash course dancing thing is to remember that not everything has to be moving at once or all the time. It looks really bad when you do that. You will notice that many people who dance only use one part section of their body at one time. They will move the upper part of their body while letting their lower body stay stationary or just slightly moving their hips. For an extreme example of this, you can watch pop and lock videos where the dance is focused on the absence of motion.

Youtube.com should provide you with a good idea of what is out there. The biggest thing is that you want to have fun. I have taught people dancing and have many dance teacher friends. The ones who excell the fastest are the ones who just move to the music and don't think too much about how silly they look. Dance is not about putting your foot here, then there, and moving your upper body this way. It is about interpreting the music visually with your body (and respective partner if you partner dance).
