Both dates are correct. At the time he was born it was January 6. The modern (Gregorian) calendar was adopted in the US in 1751, and dates before that have to have 11 days added to correspond to the modern calendar. Another example: George Washington was born on what was then February 11 and is now understood to be February 22..

January 6, 1706 is his birthdate under the Julian calendar which was used by the British Empire at the time of his birth.
January 17, 1706 is his birthdate under the Gregorian calendar which was not adopted by the British Empire until 1752. The Gregorian calendar is currently used by most countries.
So technically, both are right.
