Yes, I think being around intelligent people, or listening to intelligent, interesting, educated, and well-informed people on t.v.,radio, or by reading, increases my intelligence if they are articulate, knowledgeable and/or experienced in the subject they are discussing or writing about.
"Dum Dums" as you put it cannot make you dumber.
No one can dummy you down, unless you want to be dummied down. If you have an inquisitive mind and wish to educate yourself and learn, reading all kinds of books is an excellent way to do so. Also the Internet has given us the opportunity to explore every topic under the sun, you are interested in learning more about.
