If Earth was going to be destoyed but 1000 people could be sent to space to perpetuate the species, how would you choose who would go?

I would choose the richest 250 people in the world who had the most amount of money so that they could finance the project. Each person would also have the option of bringing along 3 guests. If all of the available spaces are not taken then there could be a random drawing to fill the rest of the space ship.

If the earth was going to blow up, I would hope that the spacecraft would be large enough to be its own mini-planet.. but then again, which planet would it orbit if the earth was gone?

It would depend on how much time I had, but first on my list of criteria would be that they could not have any hereditary diseases. Next would be no one with mental illnesses or instabilities acquired or inherited. After that you would need specialists but preferably ones that have more than one specialty so that if something happened the group wouldn't be crippled in that area.
