Contrary to what most people have said here, it is NOT illegal for the news media to report the names of minors accused of, or convicted of, crimes. In most states, the law requires certain juvenile records to be sealed. But you must remember that this doesn't mean a reporter can be punished for disclosing details of a sealed record. In such cases, it would be the law enforcement official or court official who provided the records who would be culpable.

Here in Maine, minors charged of crimes are routinely pictured on newscasts and identified. In these cases, editors have decided that the alleged offenses are serious enough to provide full disclosure to the public about. In other cases, such as minor offenses, the offense isn't exceptionally newsworthy.

I thought it was illegal until I moved to Alamogordo NM. Here if a minor is arrested it makes to paper, story and all. Maybe it is not Illegal in the state on New Mexico or it is up to the state.

Because it is illegal to disclose the identities of minors..even when they have committed a crime...

that is also why you can't go into the police station and get a minor's records.
