The movie was an interesting movie and wasn't half bad until you compare it to the books and then it was terrible. There were so many things in the book that were left out of the movie. I'll try to remember most of them.
The relationship between Brom and Eragon is not the same as it was in the book.
There is no mention of Katrina, nor of any relationship between her and Roran.
There is no mention of why Roran leaves Carvahall, only that he feels like he must.
In one part Saphira is a baby dragon then she goes and flys in a storm. A bolt of lightening hits her and she comes back down to the ground a fully grown dragon.
The relationship between Saphira and Eragon is much different. In one part he wants to go somewhere Saphira does not think is wise to go he overules her knowledge and says "I'm the dragon rider and I say we go."
Angela is not the unusual, eccentric, character she is in the book. In the movie her part is called the blind fortune teller. She tells the fortune of the book with slight differences. There is no mention of Solembum anywhere in the movie, and no one tells Eragon what Solembum told him about the Menoa tree, the sword, etc...
These aren't the half of it but I have to go now. If you forget about the book then the movie isn't that bad. It's interesting but definitley not another LOTR. Hope this helps. Happy 2007!

I just finished rereading the book, after seeing the movie when it came out. I enjoyed the movie, though it did leave a lot out and change a good bit. I understand that a 500 page book is difficult to turn into a movie, and some stuff, such as the flight to the Varden, would be a bit boring to watch in a theater.
The movie, standing on its own and without comparing it to the book, is pretty good, though short (1.5 hours). The only part that I really didn't like is when Saphira flew off for the first time, then magically becomes fully-grown. Yeah. Whooo. When she lands, Eragon learns for the first time that she can communicate with him, and she tells him that her name is Saphira. That scene was just, honestly, stupid, so you have to be able to move past it to enjoy the movie. It's worth going to, but how much you enjoy it is up to you.
Characters that are left out include Katrina and the Twins, and I don't recall seeing Hrothgar or Orik - in fact, you get a glimpse of a dwarf once, but other than that, there are none.
When Arya is rescued, she already knows Eragon's name and hasn't been poisoned or anything - so she's fine.
Murtagh shows up after Brom dies.

I have read both Eragon and Eldest many and many times. I saw the movie and I don't know how anyone understood what was going on if they had not read the books. It just jumped from seen to seen so quickly.
I don't want to go on and on about what they did wrong. But it just didn't stay to the book as well as it should be.

The movie got horrible reviews. Don't use that book as an example of good writing - he basically copied Lord of the Rings and Star Wars and added dragons. Even the names of the creatures were the same, basically.
