I have a 12 month subscription for xbox online but I was wondering if I could use it for the 360.

yes you can when u get the 360 it askes if yo have had xbox 360 and want to transfer the account. if u dont have one you just go through the setup and when it says enter code you enter the code and it works and you have XOBX LIVE for 12 months. Just to let you now you need a credit card to make the account so get that before you start.
