Your best bet is going to be going back on metformin. Even if you dont have insurance, you should try to get back on the metformin. It might work without needing any other fertility treatments. Keep in mind that metformin is not a fertility drug. It treats the main cause of PCOS, making your body begin working on it's own. Here's some basic PCOS info and links. Good luck.
When you have insurance, I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are generally more knowledgeable about PCOS and the correct treatment. Unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of the proper treatment.
The underlying cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). The best treatment for PCOS is going on an insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin (1500-2550mg per day) combined with a low carb diet and exercise. There are a few important things to know:
1. Many women "pass" the test for IR, but still respond positively from the metformin. No one knows exactlly why..my thought is that the test is not a sure fire way of detecting the IR.
2. You must be on a high enough dose of metformin. I've heard women complain that their bodies dont start working even though they've been on metformin for awhile. Some doctors are hesitant to up the dose past 1500mg...but for some of us it takes more. I don't respond until my dose is around 2000mg a day.
3. It can take a few months on the correct dose, before your body is regulated.
4. It is important to treat your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are higher risks for many things (high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes, and many other things) when you have PCOS, but if it is treated properly, then those risks are lowered.
When the PCOS is treated properly, all of your symptoms may not disappear, but they should improve some. It will also be a lot easier to lose weight (and keep it off). Our bodies work against us when we try to lose weight on our own, making it nearly impossible to lose weight.
There are TONS of books about PCOS and dieting. There are two that I recommend. Here's the links at amazon for those:

I also recommend a couple web sites:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhp... This one is a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions or just chat with the women who are also dealing with PCOS. Good luck.

Have you looked into using USP progesterone cream? I know of a few women with PCOS who started using it and nw are having regular periods. I've been using it for 4 years now and it has helped so I have no PMS. I used Progestacare cream and buy it online from a vitamin company, but I'm sure some health foods stoes may carry it too. The important thing about progesterone cream is that it's USP grade.
I also have PCOS, but I'm over the age where I want any more children. I take the Metformin to help with the insulin resistance. If you are on the Met, try reducing carbs to lower your insulin levels. Chromium polynicotate (sp) a supplement can also help to lower insulin levels, so you might want to try this if you can't get the Metformin. When you do get insurance and get Met again, try to renew as soon as you can (usually at 23 days) That way, you will eventually have a backup supply for times when you don't have insurance.

Well, I'm very certain that metformin falls under the $4 prescription category that they've instituted at Wal-Mart. Simply ask your doc to call in the Rx there or call your current pharmacy and ask them to send your Rx over to Wal-Mart. So, $4 for a month's supply.
Another option is to simulate what metformin does for your insulin levels by using a supplement. My endocrinologist told me that he was at a conference which said that taking 300 mg of cinnamon (available at a health store) 3x/day has the same effect on you as glucophage.
However, if you don't have insurance, maybe getting pregnant right now may not be the best idea if even one of the cheaper Rx's costs too much....
