My mother has told me (probably annoying old wives tales) to avoid watermelon and pineapples at all cost during my pregnancy. I looove watermelon but luckily it's not in season I guess.

Has anyone else been told this as well? It apparently causes your baby to have eczma or asthma (I can't remember which one) but I can't find any articles on this. Has anyone found any health issues with their kids from eating alot of watermelons or pineapples during their pregnancy? It would be useful if there is some medical evidence somewhere on this stuff.

Thanks

No need to say my mum is full of crap. I'm sure many mothers give silly old wives tales only cos they are concerned.

No I have not heard this before. I am pregnant with my first child and i crave watermelon. It certainly does not have much in terms of vitamins but it is known to be a natural diuretic (sp) and does contain Thiamine, Vit B6 and very little fiber and protien. It certainly helped with the nausea too. There is tons of stuff online to aid you. I am careful of everything i eat so i search online id i am in doubt. (just google search 'watermelons and pregnancy' and tons of results will come up) Hope the following links help!

Watermelon is great to eat during pregnancy because it keeps you well hydrated. There is an old wives tale that if you are trying to induce labor, eating a few pineapples will bring it on. Eating pineapple in moderation should be fine!

I've never heard of either of these causing health issues in the babies.

I think that is just old wife tales. Ask your doctor to be certain; I know that I ate a lot of watermelon and pineapple when I was pregnant and none of my kids have any problems

Watermelon and pineapple are very good for you and baby. Eat as much as you want but make sure you balance your diet with other foods your body and baby needs. Your mom is full of crap.

Actually watermelon is very good for you, better if eaten at room temperature. It has more lycopene than tomatoes. Lycopene is a very important anti-oxidant. Eat away!
