It no longer works. It won't even run a regular cd-rom. Can this be fixed by a computer store? If yes what do you think the cost would be? Also if it can't be fixed ...can I buy a burner to plug into my computer?? I have tons of pictures on my puter that I don't want to lose and would like to burn them onto cd's. any help would be greatly appreciated!

first of all the burner may not be bad the power to it may have slipped off in the computer or the cable to the motherboard may have worked loose. If it has gone bad no its not worth fixing since you can buy a new one for 29.99 at walmart. your pics are safe as long as you dont delete them and you can put it in yourself and save some money too. all you have to do is buy the burner open you computer there are only two cables going to it and 4 screws you cant put the cables in the wrong spot hope this helps Roger need more help email hotdog197405@yahoo.com

It is usually cheaper to buy a new unit than to fix the old one. Now days you can buy a good dvd-burner for what a cd-burner used to cost. Use this as an reason to upgrade. If you aren't familiar with installing new drives, ask a friend for help, or you can check online for help. It's fairly simply, the hardest part is just wrestling with the cables. Check out http://www.newegg.com/ for a new cd or dvd burner.

well the benefits of getting a cd burner is that u get to back up some important files on a cd. with a cd drive u just get to rip music CDs. with a cd burner u get to back up music just in case ur mp3 loses all of its music or if your computer crashes and u need to get a new computer.

Normally if the CD-ROM is defective the cost of replacement is about $30 Labor + parts. If you want a DVD Burner as a replacement, most DVD Burners will also burn CD's.

Optical drives are throw-away units.

Open control panel and see if your device is listed. If it is listed, try to update the driver. If that does not work, buy another burner. They are relatively cheap and you might want a DVD/CD burner.
