I don't think he would be considered unhireable. Some places don't do background checks. However, most major companies do them. The best thing for him to do is be honest about his past when asked. Just because that kinda thing comes up in his background, it doesn't mean it will be held against him in a job search.

It depends on the company. If it's a position that requires a driving record, definately. If they ask if he's been convicted of a felony, he should report the DUI. The best way to aproach a problem like this is if an employer says they'll do a background check, be up front and honest. Something like, "I celebrated senior week in an irresponsible manner and received a DUI. I'm thankful that I did not harm myself or anyone else. That experience taught me a valuable lesson and made me a better, more responsible person." or something to that effect. He still may not get hired, but employers will respect his honesty. Better that than they do a background check and find out he lied.

Unfortunately all companues do perform some sort of background check. Your boyfriend should only be concerned about his DUI if he applies for a job that requires him to drive or have a CDL (Commercial Drivers License). Be aware such jobs require the applicant to meet the standards set forth by the Department of Transportation and once a person gets a job as a driver they are subjected to random drug screenings. If they do test positive or get a DWI/DUI they may lose their job depending on the circumstances.
Another thing your boyfriend may want to do is get a copy of his record to see what is on it. He may be able to work with an attorney and the court to get the first DUI off of his record, but then again it depends on the municipality where you live.

Yes. The reality is most if not all companies do require background check. Two DUI may be something the applicant will have to put down on the application. You can try not putting it down it if the company is a small but they can find it out later resulting in disciplinary action including termination.
It's a very competitive job market out there, and the companies have the right to hire who they want to hire, and normally they only want the best.

Yes, most companies do require backgrounds checks. Although most companies do this from the employment application with the applicant's signature. Government and other companies request that the applicant have a background investigation done after the job offer.

I would say that more employers require a background check than not. He needs to be completely honest when filling out a job application.
I certainly hope he has stopped drinking and is getting help for his problem. This would certainly go a long way in helping him secure employment that pays more than just minimum wage!

I used to work for a company handling the hiring and I must say a DUI does not look good but we did not NOT hire a person because of it. We asked will this person make it to work on time due to not being able to drive. As long as he makes it clear if asked how he plans to get to work be sure he says I do not drive at this time but will be taking public transportation any my girl friend will be assisting me.
Good luck,
Christy

I'm a paper clerk and I had to have a drug test and they did a background check as well. They also needed three references as well. It's a great company and obviously I passed.
The best way to do that is to have him tell a prospective boss that he made a few mistakes in his personal life in his past and is a devoted and consciences worker. Tell your guy good luck!
