I tried eBay several years ago (before all the cheap junk art arrived) and for about a year or so it was okay. Then the cheap junk art starting coming in, there were fewer bidders and visitors and I realized I was spending more time administering the sale than creating art. (Photos, forms, follow up, collect money, followup, pack, stand in line at postoffice, etc, etc.)
I went on eBay hoping it would be good advertising to spread my name and art----wrong. Even though I sold all my art up for auction, never was I contacted by anyone to show my art somewhere else.
Today I would not recommend selling ones art on eBay. It is about the worst thing an artist can do.
Remember, If you are surrounded by bad art, people think your art is bad, too.
Better to invest in building one´s own website and paint, paint, paint. Start local and take your art around to venue´s to exhibit it- restaurants, shops, bars, galleries.

I've been running a consignment gift store/gallery for 14 years... so far so good. I also sell my own work at 2 other galleries with good luck as well.
In my opinion, sales depend a great deal upon the folks who are making the actual sales. Is there someone there who actually knows something about art, or about you - your medium, your style, your background etc. It takes human contact to sell art - be sure the staff are both knowledgeable and personable.
I also believe you don't get top dollar for art on EBay - You do all the work and get bottom dollar for it. I believe EBay is responsible for de-valuing art.

I've sold paintings at local art shows put on by art guilds, but was mildly disappointed. The paintings
were not my best and for the most part were things I brought to be more are less fill ins. What most artists think are their best are usually priced higher,
plus it's impossible to think ahead to what you have in your mind at the time of the painting that would interest some one else's liking. Most times an artist should paint for himself, and if it's sell able that's a bonus.
Keep smiling and keep creating .

Believe it or not Ebay can be a great place to sell work, because you have a worldwide audience. Success will not come quickly, but if you are patient, you can build up an audience for your work, and if it is good, people who have bought your work will come back for more. One problem I see (in my opinion) with the work on Ebay, is that the work looks rushed and amateurish. People can usually tell when the work is sincere and a work of love rather than a work produced to make a buck. Good luck to you with your work.

Look for a local or online art/artist cooperative. Pooled resources increase your chance of success. Good luck!
