I got a Misdemeanor class C dismissed 5 years ago and want to know if I can still get it expunged.. Eventhough it was dismissed, it still shows up on my record as dismissed. I want it to go away completely. I am studying languages right now and wish to be an interpreter for a big agency and don't want this to hold me back. I've worked for the federal government before and I know they perform a very thorough background check.. Would this even matter for a background check like that?

If it was dismissed, youcould have gotten it expunged the next day. It costs $50.00 to do it yourself in Chicago, I'd guess it's the same everywhere.

I recently spoke to a police detective friend about this and he told me once any arrest has been made it will always show up on your record. He stated people think they can come off the record but it never does, even if you are innocent. He also told me these records are national. Sorry. I suggest you check with an attorney about this tho my freind has 30 yrs o the job / LAPD.

When you are honest with a potential employer, honesty is always the best policy especially if you know they are going to do a background check. Many people have made a wrong decision at one time or another in their lives, especially when young, and can be forgiving if you are honest up front. Maybe have your paperwork on hand (only if really necessary) for proof of dismissal. It is also possible they run acheck and are in a data base that this will not even show up on.

I believe that the class of misdemeanor, is not a serious enough offense to be worried about. However, you can get a misdemeanor expunged especially when it is dismissed. It is messed up to think that, this case has been dismissed and it still hunts you. There are expungment summits held in various states, where lawyers help you file paperwork to get it expunged. I am familiar with one in IL, but if that doesn't help you then feel free to email me, and I will give you info concerning your state.

expunged normally appies to age 18 and under.
check with an attorney- might be able to get it supressed.
dismissal is not conviction.
would have no bearing on scty clearance.
