You have to have receipts and the items must have been purchased with either cash or a debit only transaction (not a credit transaction using a debit/credit card). If you have the original receipt & it shows the items were purchased with a credit card, then the refund would have to be credited back to the credit card...or else, you receive a gift card. This is how stores keep the money on their books.

It's all about money.
Most gift cards, actually have a depreciation vaule (read the terms/conditions of the card). If you fail to use the card after a certain period, then the card's value will become less and the retailer has profited. Also, the reason is that, unless there is a receipt, the retailer has little (or in most cases) no way of knowing if that product was from there store or not.
I can't blame you. I want my money too. But that's the way it goes these days.

The store's have a new policy which prohibits them from giving you cash for your gift card. They used to let you buy something then give you the rest back in cash. Now they just subtract the amount from your gift card and you still have to shop there.
The bottom line is money. When you have to use the gift card the store makes out. If you were to just get cash back the stores won't make a profit.

You have to have a receipt or gift receipt in order to get your money back. Its always been like that. You get a store credit on a gift card whereas before you got the store credit on a piece of paper.

because thats the way they do it. it bugs me too especially because i now have over $100 in gift cards for abercrombie and i could really use the cash since i want to buy a new cell phone. i think you can only get cash back if you use the original receipt and if the person bought it payed with cash originally and thats only at some places.

Because you then have to spend your money in that store and not somewhere else. It is a sale that is not lost as they have you trapped. The option is to trade gift cards with someone else for a store that you actually want.

Because the retailers want to make sure that you spend your refund in their stores. In addition many retailers feel that it will cut down on the amount of returns thus saving them money.

it might be there store policy in some stores they have signs saying "store credit only no refunds" you are only entitled to a refund if the item is broken or damaged by law you can't get a refund because you dont like the item or you changed your mind but some stores do give refunds because its good PR but unfortunately for you this store isnt one of them

Unfortunately, stores don't want to give anyone cash. They want to sell their merchandise.

In the future, you might want to suggest that folks give you cash so that you can buy what you want or need. Doing so then creates a win-win situation for everyone as no one wants to give someone a present they don't want.
