melchizedek priesthood
in the Bible
Hebrews 7
Psalms 110:4
Genesis 14:18
In Genesis Melchizedeck was a real person.
He was the king of Jerusalem, and a preist of God. He came out to give food to Abraham and blessed him. Abraham then gave him a tenth of everything.
Now here's the important point, in Judism, the priests were decendents of Aaron (Moses's brother). Aaron and Moses were distant decendant of Levi (about 400 years in between). Levi was Abraham's great grandson. So Melchizedeck was not a priest because of his lineage, but because God appointed him.
Now pslam 110 is a prophcy about the Messiah. It's says that the messiah is priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. That means God appointed him a priest. He will not be a priest because of his lineage.
Hebrew 7 referrs to this prophecy. The book is rather dense. Hebrews is a letter of Paul to Jewish converts to Christianisty. They knew this history and the prophecy. Paul means that Jesus fulfilled this prophecy. In the letter he is trying to say that Jesus, like a priest, comes to God to atone for our sins. But he was a decendant of Judah (not Levi or Aaron,) so how could he be a priest? So Paul makes a comparison between Jesus and Melchizedek. He points out that being apopinted by God, (like Melchizedek) Jesus is superior to the priests decended from Aaron, just as Melchizedek was superior to Abraham. Therefore, we only need Jesus.
Remember, that priest would frequently offer sacrifices to God to atone for peoples sins. But, Paul is saying that Jesus in his death and resurrection was the only priest and sacrifice we will ever need.
Now, a lot of people make a big deal about Hebrew 7:3, saying "without father or mother, without geneology, without begining of days, or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever." They read too much into this.
He is basically trying to reinfornce the comparison with Jesus and notes that he is superior to the priest who were decendant of Aaron.
Anyway hope that helped.

SOME INFO:
In Mormonism, the Melchizedek priesthood is one of the two or three types, or "orders" of priesthood (the others being Aaronic or Levitical Priesthood and the Patriarchal Authority, see Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith Section Six 1843-44, p.323). The Melchizedek priesthood is also referred to as the high priesthood of the holy order of God (Alma 4:20, 13:8), or the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God (LDS D&C 107:3), or simply as the high priesthood. In Mormonism, unlike most other Christian religions, the Melchizedek priesthood is thought to be held by mortals as a normal priesthood office, and not solely by either pre-Aaronic priests such as Melchizedek, or Jesus alone, as most Christians interpret the Epistle to the Hebrews. The name of this priesthood became Melchizedek "because Melchizedek was such a great high priest" and "to avoid the too frequent repetition" of the "name of the Supreme Being" (D&C 107:2-4) This priesthood was on the earth since Adam received it and conferred it upon Abel and Seth, and it was conferred successively upon the early patriarchs. Through it Enoch led his people to become so righteous and obedient that they qualified to be translated as the City of Enoch. Noah held this priesthood, and it remained on earth until the time of Moses, who received it "under the hand of his father-in-law, Jethro; (D&C 84:6) and it would have been given to the children of Israel if they had been worthy of it and had not "hardened their hearts" (D&C 84:24). (See also Exodus 19:5,6; Hebrews 12:20).
I HOPE THIS HELPS, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

One of the most mysterious people of the Christian Bible is the king of peace, Melchizedek. He "appeared in the life of Abraham (then Abram) and was never heard from again (Genesis 14:20). This meeting was the subject of Hebrews in the New Testament.
The significance of Melchizedek is that he like Abraham were strangers and foreigners to each other but they shared an important characteristic: both worshiped and served the one true God who made the heaven and earth.
He was one of the small group of God-honoring people thoroughout the Old Testament who came into contact with the Jews (Israelites) but were not Jews themselves.
He ruled in Salem, the future Jerusalem and was both king and high priest. Read about him in Genesis 14:17-20, Psalms 110:4 and Hebrews 5-7.

Jesus Christ came from the line of Judah (Tribe of Kings). Jesus was called the king of the Jews. He is also referred to as the high priest, offering sacrifice for the world. He is not from the tribe of Levi (the line of Priests). The High Priest of Salem (Melchizedek) is the Priestley line Christ is from; therefore, he is able to be the High Priest without being from the tribe of Levi. Please read the book of Hebrews and the account in Geneses where Abraham meets Melchizedek. This will give you more insight into this biblical character. Please note the more you study him the more mystery you will encounter. That doesn't mean you shouldn't study.
