Why do SO MANY people not understand the difference between "there" and "they're"?

"they're" means "they are"

I grew up in a VERY SMALL town where people REALLY don't understand much about grammer, YET I have learned this simple lesson. Why haven't others? SO MANY others...

It's grammar, not grammer.

Maybe they type in their sleep?...
Joking aside, I know what you mean. I'm crazy about grammar (not grammer btw; sorry about that I'm a grammar nazi). And I have autism. And people who don't have learning disabilities don't have an excuse! Then again, it could merely be a product of this fast-paced society. Who takes the time to wait, anymore? I do!

most people do know the difference, but when they're typing they're in a hurry and don't pay any attention to it.

really, what has growing up in a small town have to do with it? i'm sure that you have schools there.

Ya i get you, but i guess "they're" a lot of people who just don't pay enough attention to grammar and the like. You're right though, "there" is no excuse for that..lol...:D

I think our education system is falling to the wayside. So often on this Q&A bord there's so many people who mistake lose for loose.
Either many people here are very undeucated for their age, or they are lying on their profiles.

They know the difference. It's just a matter of laziness and the fact they simply do not care.

Because a lot of people don't realize (or care) that they are being judged by how they talk and write. And thus, they don't feel it's important.

Either they didn't pay attention in school or they just skipped school most of the time.
