When buy a laptop, it is just like buying any other things.
What is your buget? What is your requirement?
If you just need something that work, you can buy Dell with a lower cost.

1. HP is a very good brand. They are known for making quality equipment.
2. Storage spaces varies alot. If your going to be holding a lot of music/videos/pictures, then get more space. Otherwise, don't waste the money.
3. You may not be able to convince your mom its a good idea. Just explain why you need the laptop.
4. Get them direct from HP - It's easier.
5. There really isn't a reason to have both a laptop and a desktop. If you really feel that you need the portability of a laptop, then perhaps you should trade in your desktop to pay for it.

2. A good laptop will have 60GB-120GB hdd space. They can cost you about $1000-1500
3. Find a good HP laptop with attractive specs and reasonable price, that might convince your mom to buy it
4. Get it from a branded computer store next to your house, and don't forget extended warranty!
5. Yes i do, but i use my laptop more. What i've done is that the desktop is outside my room, and i have this little table in my room where i've put my laptop. so my laptop is acting like a desktop, and at the same time if i remove all the wires its portable.

hp is a good brand as long as you dont get the cheapest one get something mid range and opt for at least a 2 year warranty
storage and price vary how to convince mom is by getting a job and saving to pay for it yourself also i have several desktops and 2 laptops including a mac and a linux machine
