Signs of hard water are poor sudsing, white spots on glasses, coffee maker sputters from clogging. If you have ever used a vaporizer and did not put salt in it but still had a lot of steam, you probably have hard water. Also, hard water boils faster and steams more than flat water, but I guess that is hard to compare. Not all hard water is bad tasting or smelling. Sometimes it actually tastes good (think mineral water) but it is always bad on your appliances. That's how my tap water is, it tastes yummy but I have had to replace my coffee maker twice in one year.

Shayna has all the right points except that it does not always smell bad, that can be sulphur or other minerals. Why not call a few companies, most test water for free. Of course you may think they may just want to create business but if you take your water sample to 3 companies and they comback with virtually identical results you can probably trust the results and decide what to do about it - if anything. We have hard water - just don't drink it - use bottled water for that (big bottles :-)

The best method to know the exact hardness is to go to Leslie's pool supply purchase a Taylor Water Test kit called "complete high" kit # "K-2005" . Do the hardness test if color change does not occur within 100 drops stop the test, for testing water thats above 1000ppm hardness is a waste of reagent. Hardness below 250ppm may easily become aggresive, hardness above 400 may easily become scale forming.

When I moved to Minnesota, it was the first state I lived in with hard water problems. First sign I saw was a shower door that was supposed to be see-through, but was so cloudy you couldn't see through it. Faucets also often get caked up and shower heads don't flow freely (some of the holes get clogged and you usually end up having to replace them).

Are your dishes and plumbing fixtures are getting mineral deposits on them? Having a bad hair day? You can call a plumber and have the water tested. They can get you a water softener designed specifically for whatever minerals are plaguing your water. Mine water is extremely high in iron, and without the water softener, my water is orange.
