What was it and what did it mean to you when you were young? Did your kids take to it as well as you did? Or will time tell?

Hard question. I don't envision ever having children. Yet there are things I have saved from my grandparents that mean a great deal to me. Silly things: a deck of cards that my grandma and I used, a decorative glass duck that belonged to my granddad, a necklace that my grandma used to wear that became her trademark. Those are things that I wanted for myself.

The best thing I've saved are the stories of my childhood. I have a lot of stories...and most of them are true. :-) They take to them pretty well because they're humorous and always show a side of their dad's foibles that they really didn't know existed. So it's a way for me to show them that I screwed up way more than they ever have (I thank god for that every darn day, lemme tell ya. If my kids were half as devious as I was, I'd need sedation) and they just sit back, shaking their heads, shocked that I would do such a thing, or that this or that happened. Now that a very old friend of mine is living with me for a bit, the stories around the dinner table of what he and I got up to amuse them to tears of laughter.

So, if nothing else, my misspent youth has now paid off with the smiles I get from my kids.

My grandmother gave me a subscription to Cricket magazine when I was 7 years old. I continued to get the magazine for the next 8 or 9 years. I've saved almost every issue; there's about 6 years where I have every single issue. This magazine was simply devoted to the love of reading and every issue had tons of wonderful stories. Some were sad. Some were silly. Some were whimsical. All of them were wonderful.

Well, i don't have any kids at the present time but when i do, i will have saved them the following:

- My jewelry.
- My stuffed animals.
- My journals (although they won't be able to read them until i pass away...)
- My books (i hold my books quite close to my heart...)
- My perfume (i don't want them to forget how i smell...)

Yeah, i'm a wierdo but i think i'll be writing a will soon.
Not for my kids since i don't have any right now but just so the things i mentioned go to those that would appreciate them.

Everything else can be tossed out.

I saved a few books that I loved, like 'Island of the Blue Dolphins' and 'Matilda' and a few others...I read a lot throughout my childhood, and I want to share all of those great stories with my daughter. Since she's three, books like that will have to wait a few more years, but she already loves to read :)

My grandmother made me a quilt, and I still have it to this day. It was a symbol of love and it still is. As for if my kids will take to it, well I gotta have kids first for that to happen, but I hope they will enjoy it as much as I did and pass it on.

I have this stuffed life-sized doggy that I have had since I was two years old. It's still in remarkably good shape, so I hope to pass it on to my own child in the future.
