Why do people kiss at the New Year?

I know the theory that whoever you're with on New Year's Eve is who you'll be with the rest of the year, but what about those people who just kiss someone at the party they're at or kiss the random person they're out with just so they won't be alone?

Some think that who ever you are with at midnight New Years Eve is who you will be with all year . The kiss is because they believe the same of what you are doing .
