FYI: the 11 year-old girl is very mature (listens to Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Mozart, Beethoven.)

It depends on how mature you are. Age doesn't matter. If you think the book will contribute to your education in a positive way and you wish to read it, go ahead and do so.

Catcher in the Rye is a great book but not for an 11 year old. First of all some of the material is not appropriate for a child that age. Secondly, the 11 year old most likely would not get the story - the humor, satire, the complexity of the characters...I read it as a freshman or sophomore in high school - loved it - laughed at the humor...that out loud kind of laugh ...but I also understood the meaning the author was conveying through Holden....great book...but have the 11 year old wait a few more years.

"Cather in the Rye" is a modern classic that has helped millions of teenagers get through adolescence. But at eleven you're a little young to have experienced what the narrator is going through. Wait til you're thirteen. It will be worth the wait!

I'd wait till you learn some of the true horrid in the world, then you will be old enough to understand it is good for teenagers.
