Artists such as Tracey Emin, Damian Hirst have taken most of the limelight for some time now. They are part of the so-called "Brit Art" pack that emerged through the 90s in London. It all started with a seminal exhibition caleld "Frieze" organised by Hirst and others after graduating from Goldsmiths College. The artists were collected by Charles Saatchi and noticed by Jay Joplin who went on to represent them. They shot to fame when Saatchi held an exhibition of his collection in 97 called "Sensation". Saatchi's background as an ad man came in very handy for promoting the exhibition, which was all over the papers for various reasons.

Now the Saatchi Collection, Joplin's "White Cube" Gallery and to some extent Goldsmiths College, are synonymous with success in contemporary art. For a comprehensive list of currently successful and famous artists, all you have to do is visit their website www.whitecube.com

Grayson Perry is a British artist who creates mad designs on large pottery pots.

He's in the limelight because he won the Turner prize in 2003 and is a totally groovy English eccentric who loves dressing up like Alice in Wonderland.

He was recently featured on the South Bank show with Melvyn Bragg.
