Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly are lots of fun and are also challenging, however, chess makes one learn how to plan in advance. It's more challenging, and it will be around for a very long time. The more you play, the better you get at it. Either you win or you lose. There are no arguments about whether the question was fully answered, if there could be other possible answers, can you borrow from others to buy property, is that a real word (Scrabble), etc.
You win, or you lose! It's that simple! No fighting over who won.

Chess.
It's been around for a long time
Has a little more logic interest than checkers
Doesn't take a long time like many of the games we grew up with.
Accepted by many cultures and pieces can be changed to adpat to different time eras and personalities of interest.
Doesn't take a lot of time to setup or put away.
Chess will still be around when many of the other board games we know have faded away. Ask Spock, he plays chess on the Enterprise. Can you imagine Spock playing Monopoly or Mystery Date?

I honestly must say Risk. I got the new edition for Christmas a week ago, and it was awesome. The game requires logic and a lot of wits to win, which is why I love it! But, hey, that's just my opinion. I happen to love games that include tyranny, logic, and empires.

All time fav is SCRABBLE. It is great for any age group, uses the brain, and is very entertaining. We tend to make up some of our own rules when we want to mix it up, ie any word goes as long as you can use it in a sentence, dirty words, etc. There is even a documentary about the game. It Rules.

Axis and Allies. This game has lots of cool pieces and lets you relive World War II. It raised the bar for board games when it came out.

Who doesn't like a good game of Monopoly? The special versions (catopoly, dogopoly, etc.) are also fun to play!
