Upgrading RAM is the best way to make it faster. Also, making sure you don't have too many programs running at once can help... oh, or opening system in the control panel setting the performance options to best performance. Try those out if this is Windows XP...
otherwise just try the RAM.

No, upgrading your hard drive won't make it any faster. Hard drives are just storage devices: they have no bearing on how fast the computer runs.
If your looking at hardware upgrades, then start with upgrading your RAM. This will make it loads faster, and RAM is fairly cheap. Only issue: swapping out RAM on a laptop is not always able to be done by a user - you might have to take it into a shop, which will drive up the cost.
The cheapest ways to speed up your machine are through software methods. Start by uninstalling software that you don't use/don't need.

There are few things that you need to watch out:
1.CPU speed.
2.RAM Size.
3.HDD Size.
4.OS and Application.
5.Defarg Status.
If you have a slow CPU, I will recommend to min the OS and application on the system.
If your CPU is Intel Pentium 4 with 2GHz, that should be fine.
If you are running on Windows XP Pro SP2, I will recommend to have min 512MB when you have intention to put in more application after the OS.
Since you have enough of RAM size, I will recommend to have 3 x space size for the RAM. It mean, if I have 512MB RAM, I should have 1536MB for virtual memory.
In order to keep the system smooth and stable, I will recommend to install application that you need and not application that you like. At the same time, install applicate update always to smoothen the process.
Last, but not least, remember to defrag the HDD to on and off. It help to speed up the system processing.

The best way (though its the hardest) is to upgrade the possessor and the RAM.
If you cant get to the possessor just upgrade the RAM and delete all you don't need.
Try to use a built in program like disc defragmenter or disc cleanup
A larger hard drive makes it act slower.

You can very rarely upgrade the internal hard-drive on a laptop, and this would make it slower, as your system has more hard-drive to scan.
The easiest way would be to delete anything you don't need any more, do a disk-cleanup and defragment, and see if you can upgrade the RAM.

I would go with a memory upgrade, Also do some Hard Disk cleanup. Get rid of those programs (uninstall them) you don't use anymore. delete those TEMP files.
