I have heard some hair-raising stories about how people are treated in our county prison, and it disturbs me that they are not cared for, because brutalizing people just makes them more brutal in return.

Some of what you heard is more than likely true. Police beat people and mistreat them all the time in prisons and in our county jails. I don't know where you are located but I'm in California. They do tend to mistreat people but it's very difficult to go against the poice so very rarely do people ever try. For first offense drug users and even convicted first time offenders of most crimes, they get a slap on the wrist and more than likely probation. Some police don't care. That's why we have internal affairs and the ACLU. I work for a law office so I know some of the things that were going on. It's so easy for people to say that others shouldn't commit the crime so they won't have to go to jail and get treated that way, but we are all humans and don't we all deserve to be treated as such?? No one human being is any better than the next. One might have more than another but I feel that we are all equal and therefore deserve to be treated that way.

This seems a little hard to believe about "brutal" treatment for they would be in legal trouble big time on lawsuits over and over...and don't fool yourself there are plenty of lawyers out there that love to take on towns, counties and jail systems.
Most drug addicted inmates are having to be held in the jail to await an opening in a mental facility the family has signed them into thru the court.......otherwise they can not hold a prisoner that long.....but you said "prison" not "jail" so not sure...maybe the prisoner is more brutal for having to go thru withdrawal of their drugs??

Well if people do not want the harsh treatment of a prson life, then don't commit any crimes and you won't have to worry about that. There are too many bleeding hearts out there, people are in prison for a reason, remember that. "a reason". Guards are there to ensure no one escapes and no one gets hurts, but they can't watch (babysit) everyone all the time.

???... Even *if* what you heard is true... wouldn't it be incumbent on the so called ones *on drugs* not to use the drugs in the first place and therefore avoid the "brutalizing"

Usually first time offenders get probation and court-ordered rehab.
If they go back to it and end up in jail, then they only have themselves to blame.
