No. You could raise it to 21 and kids will still smoke because its something you shouldnt do and thats the main appeal to kids. Its subversive behaviour, and it makes them feel more grown up. So raising it just makes them feel that much older. If you want to target the youth market you have to get at the stores selling them through sting ops. Leavy insanely large fines. i.e. practically losing ones business, and having prison terms of years, and kids wont have it so easy.

Eventually, yes. Immediately? No. Those who are addicted will stay addicted. Those who got Cigarettes underage before will soon come of age in a few years, but they wont' want to risk getting Cigerettes at age 1 for their friends, as it's illegal. by 18, hopefully they'll realize that it's not something they should share.

It happened in the US, it should work the same in the UK.

Only if it's strongly enforced. Of course many kids will continue to pick up the habit due to peer pressure. But if cigarettes can't be legally sold to anyone younger than 18 it's bound to help cut down some on children smoking.

I would think it would increase underage smoking since there would then be more people below the legal age who smoke.

it probably won't cut underage smoking by much. if kids want something bad enough, they find a way to get it. just a fact. my parents were both smokers, had 4 kids, they allowed me to smoke, and bought them for me from the time i was 13...really bad, i know. none of my siblings smokes. i have 4 four kids, i still smoke...really bad, i know. none of my kids smoke. i struggle to quit smoking all the time. i really hate that it's so difficult for me to get this addiction out of my life...none of my friends smoke either. it's craziness.

Hardly.... it's just raised the age by which they measure who is underage... by definition there will be *more* underage smokers.

Probably neither directly nor immediately - but it will raise the consciousness of the dangers associated with smoking.

How do we know what you Brits feel about smoking? We got our own problems with it........anyway, the teenyboppers will think it's twice as cool to light up.
