Is it bad for the fridge to be kept off, or should I turn it on periodically? Should I store it with the door open?

I don't know how long you are storing it for, but if you think about it, all of the brand new fridges in warehouses are left off for months on end and it does them no harm at all. Make sure that you clean the inside really well--preferably wipe it down with a 10% bleach solution because you do NOT want to come back to mildew problems. Then, put a bag of activated charcoal in both compartments to absorb any moisture or smells. Also, the door question is a good one, because if it is going to be stored anywhere that there is even a small potential of a child finding it (like in someone's basement) you should remove the doors entirely so that they can't get in there and suffocate. If it's secure (like in a locked storage unit) you can leave the doors closed with the charcoal inside.
