Yes they can Jim Morrison, front man for the doors, was huge into poetry and used his learnings poetry to write song lyrics. The best example though is Bob Dylan he's one of the greatest song writers of all time and if you read some of his lyrics you can see it's actually just a poem.

Totally. Like there are some songs that do ryhme and look like poems. There are very few but it's a lot easier being a poet...I write poems and songs and it is way easy for me because I kinda know how to write and everything. It helps a lot being a poet. I say you ahould go for it and start writing.
