talk to your landlord sometimes they will allow it if the other takes over the others share of the lease or you find another willing to do so.

You are both still responsible assuming both are on the lease. One of you will have to bite the bullet and pay even though not living there. That is unless you can find someone to take over the whole lease or become a roommate and take over half the lease.

The fact that you broke up is none of the concerns for the landlord. They can hold both of you to the lease as they were and still are legally binding. That is, if your boyfriend leaves the apartment and if you fail to make the payment, he, as well as you, can be placed on collection, or come after both of you for damages.

That said, many landlords are understanding of changes in lives that they will try to accomodate you as much as they can. Do you intend to take over the lease? Do you have sufficient credit on your own? Or do you want to pay the penalty and get out? Or do you want your name off it?

The best thing you can do is to decide what YOUR wishes are (so that you can talk to them without too many what-ifs) and start talking to the leasee. Keep in mind, they are not legally required to help you out, so be nice and reasonable and FLEXIBLE on your requests.
