i mean more like a lacy pattern rather than cable ie if the pattern is all over the sleeves as aposed to a cable pattern in the centre

also on a front of a cardigan where you have to inc or dec
surly there is an easier way than trying to re write the whole pattern every row

Increasing is easier, especially if it's at the edge - the extra stitches just become a logical extension of the pattern. Decreasing requires a little more planning, depending on the stitch pattern. I'd get a good knitting reference book - I use Vogue Knitting. You could also join TKGA (the knitting guild association) - there are lots of resources available there.

Usually increases or decreases are done at the beginning or end of a row (i.e. sleeve shaping). Your cable stitches shouldn't be that close to the edge and when you increase/decrease 1-2 stitches in from the edge you will come out with your cables nice and straight and the proper shaping of your pattern. I use a row counter or a post-it stuck to my pattern to tick off the increases/decreases or when when it's time to cross the cables.
