What are the reasons for someone being protective over you? Especially someone who you thought didn't want anything to do with you.

You've got to ask yourself, are they protective?
Chances are that they are fond of you and would not want you to be with anyone else.
In bad cases, they want you to steer clear away from anyone they might want or from their friends/people they know.
Get reassurance and talk to them!
