In the employment history section of her resume, where you list dates worked at which job, I would put the dates of the pregnancy and word it as maternity leave, or similar terminology. That way it explains the gap in professional wording. Or, she could not list it on the resume. If someone asks her about that period of time during an interview, she could explain it then (as maternity leave). But there's no harm in just putting it on the paper.

The worst thing to do on a resume is to lie, or even "stretch the truth" in terms of filling in a gap. There's NOTHING wrong with having an employment gap for a good reason such as being pregnant and spending time with a new baby. :) That is NORMAL, and to be expected. No one would ever fault a person for taking time off to be a mother and care for a baby. I think your sister should definitely be honest about her gap in employment. In a case like this, honesty is the best policy, since there's nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of. :)

Just write in the gap "on maternity leave". Everyone understands that type of things, and if they don't then your sister shouldn't want to work for them. But be sure that you do not lie, that is the worst thing to do on a resume.

I think an appropriate way to put this on the resume would simply be "maternity leave" followed by the start and end dates. Don't go into detail about it because it is self-explanatory, and it wouldn't be the first time that the company has dealt with it.

Leave it 'open' on the resume, but address the gap in her cover letter. State "In September 2006 I left the XXX company after the birth of my baby and I'm now ready to return to the work force. XXX may be contacted and will provide a positive reference regarding my dependability and high work ethic" blah, blah, blah....
