Every culture since anchient times even before Dracula has had some sort of vampire legend.

The word Upir as a term for vampire is found for the first time in written form in 1047 in a letter to a Novgorodian prince referring to him as 'Upir Lichyj' (Wicked Vampire).

The Ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet in one myth became full of bloodlust after slaughtering humans and was only sated after drinking alcohol colored as blood.

Now if want to go way back as far as it can go: Lilith is said to be the first :
Lilith is a female Mesopotamian night demon believed to harm male children. In the Book of Isaiah, Lilith (לִילִית, Standard Hebrew Lilith) is a kind of night-demon or animal, translated as onokentauros in the Septuagint, as lamia "witch" by Hieronymus of Cardia, and as screech owl in the King James Version of the Bible. Lilith also appears as a night demon in the Talmud and Midrash. She is often identified as the mother of all incubi and succubi. Late medieval Jewish legend portrays her as the first wife and equal of Adam. Considering Adam inferior, Lilith left the Garden of Eden of her own free will (Other stories claim Lilith refused to lie under Adam, as she considered that this was too submissive). Adam then bade three angels to find Lilith and bring her back. When Lilith refused, God punished her by commanding that she slay 100 of her children, called Lilin, each day. Lilith is also sometimes considered to be the paramour of Satan.[citation needed

The fictional sense would be Nosferatu(sp?)

But Dracula was alive WAY before the 1920's ( when Nosferatu became mainstream.)

In the 1400's during Vlad's reign, the people of Trensylvania actually belived he was a vampire. The story is a bit confusing In fact when his cousin's baby came down with taberculopsis( again sp?) He took the infant into his arms and jumped out the window of the princes chamber's, ]

The town's people believed this illness to be the curse of the vampire.

The wearwolf is suposed to protect them.

They believe the wolf is a spiritual warrior, and when neded can take the form of a ghost army to fend off intruders.

It is an interesting study, I learned all about it around Halloween on the History Channel.
The prince I spoke of, Vlad and Elizabeth Bathory were all realted, ( differant time periods) but still realted, Vlad was ruler of what is now Romania,

The prince( sorry i forgot his name) was Trensylvania

and Elizabeth was countess of Hungary.

All three were complete mad men/women. Elizabeth bathed in the blood of virgins.
