When you say very wet, do you mean completely soaked with water running out of them when you pick them up. If so, the water is probably not draining.
Open the lid JUST before it starts spinning, or right after it starts. There should be no water in the tub.
If there is water, that is a symptom of the problem. I have had this problem and I took the pump out of the machine. It had toothpicks stuck in it so it didn't pump. This has happened a couple of times over the years.
Removing the pump is fairly heavy work. Opening it up and putting it back together is a little tricky too, but it depends on your skill level and your tools.
How fast is it spinning? If it isn't fast enough, they won't remove the water. A worn belt will cause it to spin too slow. You get to the belt from the bottom, so again, it is heavy work. You might be able to see it from the back, especially after removing any access panels there.

check the rubber belt that turns the tub. If it's spinning and not getting the water out it might be off track or you may have a problem with the exit of the water , check the hose and make sure water is able to pass through that it's not clogged. Other than that I don't know.

I like the pump answer. Also be sure that the clothes are in there evenly so it can reach "peak" speed in the spin cycle, thus extracting the water from the clothes. It shouldn't be banging around.

Is it possible you are overloading it? Try a small load and see what happens. If it's an old unit, repair may be an option. These days it seems cheaper to simply replace broken appliances.

Also make sure you are not overloading the washer. Make sure it is draining properly. The outgoing drain may be clogged, causing some drainage water to back flow into the washer.

First be sure it is on the proper load setting, clothes will stay very moist on the delicate cycle, perhaps that is where you are at.......Then investigate the drain and pump system.
