I'm pretty sure this is potential SPAM, but I'm going to answer anyhow for the other members who might enjoy it:

The vampire (a life-sucking, parasitic, supernatural creature) is one of humankind's oldest "boogey men". It first appeared in written record as the ekkimu in ancient Sumer, a disembodied spirit of the dead that roamed the night in search of living victims to steal the life essence from. This is not what most people think of when they hear the word, but that is the historical origin of the myth. Our concept of the vampire really began to take form in Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. Their vampire, though, was a decaying revenant, reeking of death and visiting the homes of friend and loved ones. The two most prominent modern practices that remain in place from this superstitious time are the wake and throwing rice at a wedding. Several things could cause the deceased to become a vampire, among them a black cat jumping over the body before it was buried, and so someone sit vigil through the night watching over the body to ensure that no such thing could happen. Vampires at this time were believed to be particularly fond of virgins (and brides were assumed to be such), and it was also said that they had to count things around them...and so...as the newlyweds left the church, grains of rice were scattered to distract any lurking vampires while the virgin bride safely escaped (the Count on Sesame Street is a cute, modern homage to that legend). Today's vampire is a romantic figure...think Louis and Lestat of Anne Rice's world. They owe their existence not to Bram Stoker's Dracula, but rather to Dr. John Polidori, physician and traveling companion to Lord Byron in the early 19th century. His short story, "The Vampyre", featured Lord Ruthven: the first suave, seductive, neck-biting vampire of literature; Western or otherwise. The character was based on Byron himself. From there we moved onto Varney the Vampire (an infamous penny dreadful of that era), LeFanu's Carmilla, and finally Stoker's Count Dracula.

The vampire is one of our most prevalent and fun myths. It has evolved with the times. Now we have the modern vampire subculture. Psychic vampires, sanguinarians, sexual and emotional vampires...not to mention rpg'ers and larp'ers. In the end, though...fiction and nothing more.

I enjoy a good vampire novel especially Anne Rice. I have developed a likeing for one inparticular and that is the vampire Lestat the main character in all of Anne Rice's novels.

I think vampires are sometimes misunderstood creatures that by no choice of their own have drunk the dark blood as they were faced with a choice to drink and live or not to drink and dye.

I can only talk about Anne Rice's vampires that I have read about especially Lestat who is the most powerful of all vampires he is also, very loving, caring and ruthless.

It is his personality and the adventure and troubles that he finds him self in that makes me like him and the other vampire characters. Although they are complex in nature I am crazy about them. Hence my name vampire_crazy2003
