I have to go over to my in-laws soon for dinner and wish everyone a Happy New Year when they all hate me and think I'm a jerk, but I'm not sure why; they're very irritable and miserable today

Do your out-laws really hate you or is that just an assumption? I'm going to assume that you don't act like a jerk around them. =)
If they are unpleasant to be around just go for a few minutes and leave. If they treat you horribly, don't go at all. Tell them that respect is of great value to you and you do not allow yourself to be disrespected.
