Complex question. The traditional idea was drink whites with fish and reds with beef, pork, lamb, etc. However, people drink what works best with the main course today.
Red Snapper is a more dense fish compared with a simple white fish. So, I say drink a red with Red Snapper because the red will hold up well against the texture of the Snapper (Sea Bass too).
Avoid heavy Cabernets. Go with a lighter red, perhaps a Pinot Noir or a Rhone Valley Blend (from France, Spain or California). Pinots and Rhones will be lighter in body. A Pinot will have a mild "front taste" that complements the Red Snapper. Enjoy.

I would have to say 'white' wine is the choice.
My daughter works at a Red Lobster and tells all her guests
to try certain 'white' wines with snapper, as this seems to be the
preference of choice by most customers.
I must admit I have tried both, and 'white' wine gets my vote.

The "best wine" to drink with ANY food is the one you like best with it! However....it depends on how the Snapper is prepared; Red Snapper is a "robust" enough fish that though a white wine (Pinot Grigio, or Sauvignon Blanc...the ubiquitous Chardonnay might be too sweet) would be traditional, there are many lighter reds that would be delicious with this yummy fish. If it's sauceless I'd go with a $10 bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, if it's sauced then pick a 'fruity' red like a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon.
Enjoy your fish!

It is the custom to drink a white wine with fish or poultry and use red wine for meats. But that's typical. If you want to drink red wine with the fish, go ahead!
