There is water pouring from behind the actual shower on the wall when we turn the shower on. When we take the shower head off, it stops leaking - we have replaced the hose and checked that the shower head isn't blocked. Any ideas?

If this water is coming from a small piece of plastic tube at the bottom of the shower housing then you have burst the OPD ( overpressure relief device).
This is a very small diaphram or hard rubber ball inside a plastic attachment.
Its very simple to replace and you need to contact the manufacturer and buy a replacement or two.
Its a five minute job if you have the tools.

When you removed the shower head, did you clean the screen of debris? Not all models have a screen, so look there first. If there is a blockage in the head, water pressure will build up, and if you didn't put any Teflon tape, or pipe joint compound, then water can spray out the back of the head, and it seems like there is a leak in the wall. Try these first, and if you still can't find the problem, call a professional. The longer you wait, the worse the situation will get, and mildew and mold can be the result. Not to mention how the water will ruin floors, walls, etc. Good luck to you, and Happy new year!

If the leak stops when you take the head off, then pressure is building and causing the leak. The two possible places to leak are; 1 the head & neck, use teflon on both threads and tighten the neck in the wall then the head. 2 the actual diverter ( where you switch over from tub to shower) probably just have to tighten the packing nut or put teflon on the stem then tighten. good luck

There is a filter on the end of the shower hose that is fitted on the shower end. unscrew this and see if the filter is blocked. It is a small plastic on, so watch you don't lose it. Other fault could be a leaking joint in the shower itself. Remove the front cover and see if you can see a leak with the shower switched on.

Try wrapping a few layers of plumbers tape around the thread of the shower attachment. Sounds like the water is leaking from here under the normal pressure of the shower use.
