So the dealer can't muck your cards.. If you place your cards down on the table without a card protector, the dealer might assume that you are folding and put your cards into the muck.. Once your cards have been mucked you cannot win the hand no matter what
They are only useful in hold 'em, omaha, omaha h/l, deuce to seven, etc where all of your cards are face down. In the stud games like stud, stud h/l, and razz they are not necessary. The way to signal to the dealer that you want your cards mucked in those games is by turning over your face up cards.
If you do not want a fancy card protector like many of the pros have, you can simply use one of your chips. The only time you won't have this card protector is when you go all in, and the dealer will know not to muck your cards after you have already gone all in.
