Er is just something to express when you cannot think of anything... It is in a way of a natural way of quick thinking... just how the French say, "Euh.........." but not drawn out so much?

it is just a short way for saying, "nah, really?" or people use it when somebody is saying something that everybody knows about exept the person that asked!

Well, it depends. "Duh" can either mean, "That's obvious." Like, "What's 2+2?" "4, DUH!" Or, as a funny way of saying "I don't know." Like, "Who was the 4 emporer of the Byzantine Empire?" "DUH?" As for "Er" It's a pause, when you don't know what to say, or are hesitating to speak. "Did you sleep with my mom?" "Well, er..."
