Its were they insert a needle into your womb and take a sample of the fluid surrounding the baby. They use it to determine the sex of the baby, test for Downs Syndrome and other things. It has a risk of miscarriage.

Ok, it could be 1 of 3 things.
1. They could be talking about testing to see if your water has broken. They used a small strip of pH paper, about the size of a address label, and place a swab of vaginal fluid on this strip, if it turns a certain color it's fluid, if not it's urine.
2. They could be doing an ultrasound to measure the amount of fluid that is surrounding the baby, it's just like anyother ultrasound.
3. or it could be an amniocentesis. They remove some of the amnioitic fluid thru the stomach wall with the help of ultrasound. They place a syringe thru the stomach wall and pull out fluid. They use ultrasound to make sure where the needle is.

I have assisted with many amniocentesis(in my 3 years in ob) And have never had a patient complain of more than a little discomfort. And I am a nurse that tells people "you'll feel a big stick" when that's what's going to happen.

with an amniocentesis, they can tell the sex of the baby, if the baby's lungs are mature, and if there are any other problems, such as Downs, Spina Bifida or infections. Usually the doctor with tell you what he/she is looking for.

And I have never seen anyone but a Dr do an amniocentesis

The dr or tech tests either the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby or a test for possible Downs Syndrome.

They preform an ultrasound to measure how much amniotic fluid is surrounding the baby. Too much or too little are not good signs. If levels are abnormal, they will most likely put you on bedrest and preform more tests.
