Many people will tell you that guinea pigs do get lonely if you only have one, so they recommend getting two. Here's a page I found with some intro info about guinea pigs http://www.oink.demon.co.uk/pets/guinea.htm

They are lonely if you just have one. Do they feel lonely when it's one by himself/herself no. Guinea pigs can get used to any kind of habitat you provide them. If you have a male, you can get another male cuz they tend to get along. If it's a female, it's better to leave her alone cuz with males they mate and two female guinea pigs don't get along.

We had two females and they didn't like each other. We had to keep them in separate cages. Maybe if we had got them at the same time, they would have liked one another, but we had the first one for about two years before getting the second.

Yes, however if you choose to get them a partner, make sure that you observe them before leavinvg them togather alone. They may fight, usually due to territory issues.

Yes they can. They dont really like being alone like other animals dont like it. If you get one of the opposite sex, you will want to get them fixed right away or you WILL end up w/ babies. I can guarantee that.
