I think it depends entirely on what you're studying, what your goals are, and what your reasons are for choosing one over the other. For example, if I had little children and lived 2 hours from the nearest school but wanted to take classes, I would probably choose to do so online. However, I'm single without children and live 5 minutes from the school I attend, so I think it makes more sense to go in person.
In general, I think that the traditional learning environment is better (provides more structure and interaction, facilitates more opportunities for a mentor relationship to form, etc.), but I can see how online programs can be useful as well

I would choose face to face learning. I think the experience being around other people from different background but with similar goals is important to the learning process. Discussion groups and even socialization is an important process in growing as people.

Face-to-face. I have done both distance and face-to-face. Distance learning can be quite lonely (even with forums and chat groups), and you lack the body language and social interactions of face-to-face. I found it could get quite lonely on a distance learning course.

Face to Face. The benefit being a deeper understanding from immediate contact.
