Cavalier has been one of GM's more reliable cars, have had 2 myself and would not hesitate to purchase another. my 1988 was never in the shop and had gone across the country 7 times and was great in the winter weather. My 2004 is proving to be just as good, granted they are no power house, but the price is right and the mpg is better than most :) really have seen no difference between 2.2 or 2.4 and the difference in power between them is for all practical purposes non-existent.

Hey, that's more than one question! That's cheating! *grin* The check engine light will come on when any of the systems monitored by the computer return a value outside the limits it expects to see. It's not unusual for the light to reset if the problem doesn't repeat. Indeed a fuel treatment could have made a temporary "run rich" situation which could turn on the light. As far as adding anything to the fuel, it generally only wastes your money. It has detergent from the pump, so adding more is just gilding the Lilly.

I drove two Cavaliers as company cars for several years. I drove both over 200,000 miles each and put very little money on repairs. They both gave me 32 miles per gallon on the first tank and the last tank. While they were rather small they were reliable. I have a lot of faith in them. I had the 2.2 and the power was fine.

Old or new ?
I had a 1985 Cavalier that had an engine knock for 3 years, no power, but it still ran when i gave it to a Salvage Dealer when the underneath rusted out .They are not very comfortable riding cars, but you can run them into the ground! I got my $300 worth.

My company used to buy Chevy Cavaliers and stopped because they were always in the shop, we now buy Malibus which arent any better. My advice would be to find a used Honda Civic. I woudl take a Honda Civic with 150K over a new Cavalier anyday.

Save your money, don't buy GM or Ford. They both suck. Check Consumer Reports or other sources.
