Start by doing a couple of freebies for your friends, and pass out business cards.
Go to established DJ's and ask them to hire you. The great ones have more work than they can handle.
What kind of gigs do you want? If you want to do clubs, leave your cards all around, with a list of references. If you want to do sweet 16s and bar/bat mitzvahs, leave flyers at popular hangouts and exclusive schools. If you want to do weddings, get listed on all the wedding guides, online and in print, and buy a booth at the next wedding fair, usually sponsored by a local newspaper. Googling should find that for you. Buy an ad in your yellow pages.

I would have to agree with the other answer pertaining to local clubs. That, and it all depends on where you are located and how far you are willing to travel. I have a friend or two in my area who might be able to help you out, but that's if you're available for the Twin Falls, ID area. I'm not sure what other areas they service, but it might be worth looking into. Feel free to get back to me if you need more details.
