My boyfriend and I have been tossing around the idea of moving out of Michigan due to the abysmal job situation here. We're in our early 20's, with some college but no degrees. We are smart and very hard workers (I currently work 54 hrs/wk) with our experience being in retail/customer service (we hate our jobs). We are both looking to expand our college education, but get no finanacial support from family, and are hoping another state may offer better opportunites to make that easier to do.

These are the states I've narrowed down to solely based on unemployment ratings. I would like to know peoples general impressions, especially regarding the job outlook for us, quality of life, towns we should consider...anything you can think of. These are all places neither of us have been to.

Montana, Wyoming, Virginia, Nebraska; South Dakota, New Hamsphire, Delaware, Minnesota, Maryland

Thanks in advance, and happy New Year!

Unfortunately, attending college out-of-state is pretty expensive, so be sure to change EVERYTHING to where you move to.

I would look at job availability and cost of living. Try this link: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bplive/2006/index.html. It's CNN's best places to live list. The reasons they made the top 10 may not be the reasons you'll want to move there, so keep doing research.

From your list, Eden Prairie, MN is number 10 and Columbia/Ellicott City, MD is number 4.

Well the east coast will have more opportunities but the cost of living will be high. The midwest is full of nothing, many are heading south as I am sure you know. Lots of poor ppl there as well. The good news about high cost areas is that apartment living is generally way cheaper than housing costs. Try california for instance where the average house in LA will cost over 500k, yet you can get reasonable rent on a really nice place of $1200 to $1500 a month. And the salaries will be substantially higher as well. Good luck!

Hey I live in Omaha, Nebraska. We have many big corporations here with many jobs. Most people with a good schooling background can get good jobs. There are good and bad parts of town, like everywhere, but many members of the community are coming together to stop the violence. The price of living is pretty cheap compared to many places. There is also a lot of entertainment, resturants, and general places around. It is a great place to live for most people. Just look at billionaire Warren Buffet. He still lives here and is very successful. Also Omaha has many surrounding towns to find jobs in too. So please consider coming to Omaha, Nebraska.
