The people who said to go to the hospital when the contractions are 5 minutes apart or too hard to handle are correct. If your water breaks, call your OB or midwife to let them know. They will want to know the color of the fluid, and as long as it's clear, or a little light pink from blood, that's all OK. If it is a green color, than go to the emergency room. The green would come from the baby passing meconium, his/her first bowel movement. This is usually a sign the baby is in distress.

Every OB and midwife has different policies regarding how long they feel comfortable with you walking around with your water broken and contractions starting. It seems most OB's will let you go 24 - 48 hours without the baby being born. Midwives will usually go longer, some even waiting a week. The most important thing to remember if your water is broken is to NOT be introducing things into your vagina (for example, no sex, no internal exams). This is how you will end up with an infection. When your water is broken, everything is running out of your body. When you start putting things up into your body, you are putting germs in there too.

And what someone said about having a dry birth - that's impossible because your body is consistently replenishing and making more fluid. You will never run out.

I took the birth classes and my doctor also instructed - when your water breaks go to the hospital immediately. The reason for this is because once the water has broken the baby must be delivered in 24 hours, because it is at an increased risk for infection since it is no longer protected in the sac. This is just my hospital's policy, not everyone's. Since I do not want to be in the hospital that long if I don't have to be, if my water breaks before my contractions start, I plan on waiting at least 6 hours before going in. Going in earlier would only increase my chance of them wanting to induce contractions with pytocin or something like that, and I want natural labor.

not everyone's water breaks, sometimes the only way you can tell you're in labor is with timing your contractions. if your water doesn't break, make sure you prepare for the hospital when your contractions are consistantly 3-5 mins apart. if your water breaks, you're not in active labor. that is usually the sign that your labor is starting. it could take a couple of hours after your water breaks for your contractions to reach 3-5 mins apart and active labro to begin. if you water breaks before you reach active labor, the best thing to do is walk, play cards, or do something to occupy your mind and keep you calm. as the pain intensifies, you will want to start timing contractions and prepare for the hospital. also, if you water breaks and you can tell, when you call your doctor make sure you let them know if it is clear/white or green that way they can tell you whether or not they want you to come in before you hit active labor and wait the rest of it out in the hospital, or just to relax and come when you get closer.

good luck

You should set off to the hospital if your water breaks, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the baby will come quickly. My water broke at 11:00 on a thursday night and I didn't have the baby until 3:14 Friday afternoon!
If your water breaks they will definately want to admit you!!!!!!!!!

If your water breaks, you will want to be in the hospital because the baby should come soon. Your enviornment should be as sterile as possible, so yes, get checked in to the hospital. And, good luck.

Some womens water don't break. Mine didn't with either.

You should go to the hospital when the contractions get to a point you can barely handle them.

Nope, they'll just send you home, especially if they're busy. Wait until the contractions are regular and about five minutes apart. Personally I would wait a little onger. Being in the hospital is NO fun. I'd rather labor longer at home as long as I wasn't expecting any health issues. Happy pushing!
