You should ONLY leave a tampon in for 4-8 hours. Never under ANY circumstances, wear a tampon at night OR NEVER wear a tampon when you are not on your period. You are at risk of TSS. This disease is deadly and is caused by leaving a tampon ion for over 8 hours. That is dangerous.

What is TSS?
You've probably heard of this disease before, and how it may be connected to tampon use. TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) is an infection that is very rare, but potentially dangerous. TSS can affect anyone, male or female. However, it occurs most frequently in young women who wear tampons. You will probably never get TSS, but it's good to know what the symptoms are and how to avoid putting yourself at risk.
Tampons themselves do not cause TSS. TSS is caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. When a tampon is left inside your vagina for too long, it creates a perfect environment for different types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, to grow. To avoid developing TSS, follow these guidelines when using tampons:
Change your tampons at least every 4-8 hours or more often if necessary.
Choose the correct tampon absorbency. Use smaller sized tampons when your flow is lighter. TSS occurs more often when super-absorbent tampons are used. Don't use these unless your menstrual flow is particularly heavy.
Alternate between pad and tampon use. You might want to use pads at night, and tampons in the daytime.
Wash your hands before inserting or taking out your tampon.
Don't use tampons to absorb anything other than your menstrual flow. Only insert a tampon once menstrual blood is present.
If you experience the following symptoms while wearing a tampon, remove the tampon, and contact your health care provider immediately! These symptoms may seem similar to the flu. If they occur while you are menstruating and wearing a tampon, they may signal TSS. Otherwise, it might mean that you have another infection. It is recommended that you see your health care provider regardless. Symptoms of TSS include:
Sudden high fever
A sunburn-like rash
Diarrhea
Dizziness, fainting, or lightheadedness
Vomiting

You should never use a tampon if you are on a period but as long as you have now removed it and feel generally okay then I reckon you will be fine. Symptons of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) include feeling sick, fever, aching etc. If you are still worried make an appointment to see GP just in case.

Sure you could have. It sounds like you didn't, though... assuming you've taken the thing out by now. Toxic shock syndrome comes on very quickly, and you would almost certainly be having symptoms by now.
You should never wear a tampon when you aren't menstruating.

firstly you should never ever use a tampon when not on your period its dangerous!
secondly i wouldn't be too worried toxic shock has symptoms similar to flu so if ya start feeling like that you should see ya doctor! Obviously if you are pregnant then toxic shock syndrome is potentially dangerous to your child! in the end of the day go to your doctor to put your mind at rest!

I'm so confused by this question....
Did you have sex with the tampon in? If you aren't on your period, why the tampon?
If you forget stuff like this so easily please tie a string around your finger or something.
That could be very dangerous and it can cause infection.

It is not part of your body. If left in for too long, it will lead to infection, and much worse. Imagine leaving a Q-Tip in your ear. Your ear will become very unhappy. Now go remove that tampon.

believe it or not but toxic shock syndrome still exists and leaving a tampon in too long can be a problem however my question is why would you wear a tampon if you are not having your period?

NEVER EVER EVER EVER wear a tampon when you aren't on your period. That HIGHLY increases your risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome. YES, you could have caused damage. Get to a doctor ASAP if you experience any of the symptoms of TSS, which I am going to assume you are familiar with.

I hope you are kidding. You had sex when you had a tampon in that you used without being on your period. If this is true, go to your doctor and get checked out.
