I am looking to buy a used Jetta. I found a 92 in my price range, but the seller says it needs a new ignition coil and a brake bleed. How much can I expect these repairs to cost (parts and labor)?

You could buy your own coil from EBay for $80 at most and install it VERY easily, or somebody / ANYBODY with a few tools could EASILY install it. Brake bleeding is only needed when the brakes are replaced.

Therefore, I think the seller is lying. Why would the seller not have bled the brakes when the brakes were replaced? Why would the seller try selling a car that could EASILY be repaired for $100 and sell it in GREAT condition, instead of loosing a lot of money if it "needs work".

I'd either get a second opinion, take it to a garage before buying it, or tell the guy you'll buy it AFTER the brakes & coil are fixed (assuming that really fixed it). You'll pay the extra $100 IF that fixes it.

Ignition coil should not be over 75 bucks for parts and labor and the brake bleed should cost under 50. I don't understand why it needs a brake bleed. Are the brakes sticky? The rubber lines have a tendency to collapse internally at this age. Good luck.

It sounds like if it needs a coil its not running?,coils are relatively cheap in the car parts category and bleeding brakes is no big deal either. If I was you I would insist on these things being fixed as there no big deal.Unless this person is trying to hide something from you.Good luck and be cautious, things are not always the way people say they are.

Neither is very expensive but I doubt that those are the only thing wrong with this car. These two problems are not related. If there is a brake problem, bleeding is a very easy solution, but any other brake problem could get very expensive. The coil could relate to a hard-to-start problem but there are so many other expensive related problems there too. Get it checked by a mechanic.

Forget the Jetta! There is more to it than just a bleed job!

Well first of all you should buy a tampon so you don't need to stick coils up there.

I have no clue, but I know you can bleed your own brakes and save a bunch.
