If you are starting, just make a serie of something easy to do. Go to your kitchen and you will find a lot of stuff you can draw and don't challenge you enough to make you quit at the start. If you know you can do something more difficult start making body parts like different kind of eyes, ears, mouth, a studio that doesn't make you work for too long in the same image. You can draw complete faces if you think you can. Make a serie of your favorite actors, or your family.
That kind of exercises let you practice while you are not sure what you want to do or have no imagination to create something.
You can draw tree branches, rocks. That kind of things have a lot of color values and shapes and there is no two of them identical.

You could google a favourite actress, actour, muscian or whatnot and practice your faces...
You could -as stated above...- draw your hand or any other still life and work on your technique. (an interesting technique - that I am too much of an eraser freak to try - is trying to draw an object -such as your hand - with a continuous line -not using an eraser - and not picking up your pencil from the paper - that sort of exercise helps to work on your observation skills...)
Also, what I like to do, is start a drawing from your imagination - something pretty simple that can help you focus on your shading techniques and as you get bored/ feel more comfortable you can start twisting the image and making it surreal (for example, I drew a ballerina once -i know, not very original- and I got bored and I drew her arm melting away and people hacking an axe at her pointe shoe ... and toad was just sitting there watching...) So twisting a picture is always fun...
Or of course, you could go strait to the imagination route... -dont mind me but I am not really good at it... and I tend to find it rather tedious to make things up off the top of my head... - but you might love it so go strait for the faeries, dragons, ogores, or cenataurs that you are so compelled to draw...
Also, you could try to find a magazine picture or something of that sort and try copying it - not tracing! just try to practice your observation skills - its especially fun to add in coloured pencils if the picture is rather colourful...
Those are my suggestions... then again, I am on the computer and not drawing at the moment so what do I know?

Draw a face
Start with an oval. Then draw the eyes, nose and mouth and ears.
Last draw the hair. Shade the whole thing in with pencil.

Find an elderly person, someone in their eights or more, who has spent lots of time out of doors. Someone who's age, and life experiences are in the lines of their face. Draw that face from perspectives of different moods, lights and shadows.
Do the same with their hands which will reflect their work life.
These two attributes of single person can produce many drawings. Once you have accomplished this to your satisfaction, do the same thing with a young person.
Do all of this with different mediums. Charcoal, pencil, graphite sticks, colored pencils, crayon, water color, oils, etc.
If this doesn't appeal to you, take a simple white cloth, drape so that it has many folds and pleats. Draw that with different light angles. Once happy with that change to colored cloths and then to cloths of multiple colors.

draw your own hand, that's really challenging but quick, you could do it a few times in different positions and it helps you develop better drawing techniques w/o devoting too much time to one project

Happy trees! Or not, if I was going to draw something now I would first find some children's art to inspire me. If you do a search for children's art all kind of stuff will come up. Some of it is actually fascinating and has inspiried me.
